Midwestern Roots and Education
Born in Shakopee, Minnesota, on February 2, 1947, John “Jack” Bergman grew up with the Midwestern values he often says guided his life. After his childhood in a small town, he attended Gustavus Adolphus College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1969. His education didn't stop there; he later earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of West Florida. While his career would take him across the globe, his family's roots trace back to the late 1800s in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where his ancestors worked in the iron mines. He and his wife, Cindy, eventually settled in Watersmeet, Michigan.
A Four-Decade Military Career
Bergman's most defining professional chapter is his 40-year service in the United States Marine Corps, which he joined
in 1969. His extensive career began as a naval aviator, flying CH-46 helicopters during the Vietnam War. Over the years, he flew various rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, including the KC-130. He steadily rose through the ranks, holding numerous command positions. Key leadership roles included commanding the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing and serving as deputy commander of Marine Forces Europe. His military service culminated in his final assignment as the commanding general of the Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North, based in New Orleans. In 2009, he retired at the rank of Lieutenant General, making him the highest-ranking combat veteran ever elected to the U.S. Congress when he won his seat in 2016.
Civilian Life as Pilot and Entrepreneur
Bergman’s life outside of his military uniform was just as varied. For 22 years, he worked as a commercial airline pilot for Northwest Airlines, showcasing a lifelong passion for aviation. In addition to his time in the cockpit, he ventured into the world of entrepreneurship. While still serving in the military, Bergman launched and operated a small business in the medical technology and equipment field, demonstrating an ability to balance demanding, parallel careers. This experience in the private sector, coupled with his military leadership, formed the foundation of the resume he would later present to voters.
Entering Politics and Congressional Record
Identifying as a Constitutional conservative, Bergman entered the political arena and was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2016, representing Michigan's vast 1st congressional district, which covers the entire Upper Peninsula and a large portion of the northern Lower Peninsula. His campaign themes often focus on fiscal responsibility, limited government, and national security. In Congress, Bergman has secured assignments on key committees where his background is directly relevant. He serves on the House Armed Services Committee, the Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and the House Budget Committee. His role on the Veterans' Affairs Committee is particularly significant, as his district has one of the highest populations of veterans in the country. Politically, he is a member of the conservative Republican Study Committee. He has voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act and opposes abortion, stating that the right to life extends to the unborn. He also joined the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus.
