From Coastal Oregon to the Statehouse
David Brock Smith is a product of southwestern Oregon, born and raised in the small coastal city of Port Orford. A third-generation resident of the area he now represents, his local roots run deep. After graduating from Pacific High School, he attended both Southwestern Oregon Community College and Southern Oregon University. Before entering politics, Smith worked in the culinary industry and later returned home to take over his family's restaurant, the Port & Starboard, a local fixture his grandfather established in 1970. This background in small business and his family's long history in industries like logging and the military shaped his perspective long before he ran for office.
A Career Built on Local Governance
Smith's political career began not in the state capital, but
in his own community. He served in a variety of local roles, including as president of the Port Orford City Council, a member of the local school board, and president of the Chamber of Commerce. His public service expanded to the county level when he was elected to the Curry County Board of Commissioners, eventually becoming its Chair. This extensive experience in local government gave him a ground-level view of the issues facing rural Oregonians. In 2016, he made the leap to state politics, winning a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives for District 1. He served in the House from 2017 until January 2023, when he was appointed to the State Senate to represent District 1, which covers Curry County and parts of Coos and Douglas counties.
Legislative Focus: Natural Resources and Rural Economy
Throughout his tenure in both the House and Senate, Smith has consistently focused on issues vital to his district: natural resources, agriculture, and economic development. His committee assignments reflect these priorities, having served as vice-chair on committees for Energy and Environment, Carbon Reduction, and Economic Development. He has been a vocal advocate for the fishing, farming, and forestry industries. A key part of his work has involved wildfire prevention, where he has pushed for more active forest management and fuel reduction as a means to protect communities and support the timber industry. He has also been involved in numerous state and regional task forces, including those focused on Sudden Oak Death, a tree disease impacting his district, and the economic development of the Oregon coast.
Key Policy Stances and Political Record
As a Republican in a predominantly blue state, Smith has established a consistently conservative record. His policy positions emphasize fiscal restraint, including calls for no new taxes and reductions in government spending. On social issues, he aligns with the pro-life movement, believing life should be protected from conception. He supports law enforcement and has called for greater accountability for criminal offenders to enhance public safety. Smith has also been a vocal critic of the state's handling of homelessness, advocating for more effective treatment and an end to permanent street camping. In 2020, he joined eleven other Republican state officials in a letter that supported a lawsuit challenging the presidential election results, an action he later described as an effort to highlight what he considered unconstitutional actions in other states.
Looking Ahead: A Bid for National Office
After years in state-level politics, David Brock Smith has set his sights on Washington, D.C. In May 2026, he secured the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate election in Oregon. He is now on the ballot for the general election in November 2026, where he will challenge the incumbent. His campaign themes build directly on his legislative career, focusing on affordability, public safety, and bringing a strong voice for rural Oregon to the national stage. This move represents the culmination of a political career that started in local city government and has steadily climbed through the ranks of Oregon politics.
