From Software Engineer to Attorney
Long before he entered the political arena, Everett Wess had a distinguished career in a completely different field: technology. After earning a bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics from Alabama A&M University, he began working as a software engineer. His early career saw him programming missile systems for the U.S. Army Missile Command and working on NASA payload checkout units in Huntsville. This background in critical defense and aerospace systems gave him a deep understanding of federal partnerships and technological innovation. However, after more than a decade in the computer industry, Wess felt another calling and decided to pursue a career in law, a path that would eventually lead him to public service.
A Multifaceted Legal Career
Everett Wess has
practiced law since 2000, establishing a career defined by its breadth and commitment to public service. Since 2001, he has been the Managing Partner of The Wess Law Firm, P.C., focusing on criminal defense and estate planning. His experience spans the entire justice system. He has served as a municipal court judge for eight years, a prosecutor for five years, and a public defender for five years. This has given him perspective from the bench, the prosecution, and the defense table. Wess has also represented indigent defendants in federal court, served as a special appointed judge in Jefferson County, and has argued cases at both the state and federal appellate levels.
Deep Roots in Alabama and Community Service
Wess is a lifelong Alabamian with deep connections across the state. He grew up on the Gulf Coast, later living in Selma, Huntsville, and, since 1997, Birmingham. His extensive education was all completed within the state, including degrees from Selma University, Alabama A&M University, and the Birmingham School of Law. His commitment extends beyond his professional life. He serves on the boards of organizations like Childhaven and Legacy Works, which support at-risk youth. He is also the State President of the Alabama New South Coalition, an organization focused on civic engagement, voter registration, and advocating for equitable policies.
Record in Politics
Everett Wess is the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Alabama for the November 2026 election. He secured the nomination after winning a primary runoff in June 2026. This is not his first time seeking public office; he previously ran for probate judge in 2018 and for circuit court judge positions in 2014 and 2016. As a candidate, he has focused on themes of affordable healthcare, especially in rural areas, economic opportunity, and ensuring fairness in the justice system. His platform often draws on his diverse background, citing his father's experience as a union worker and his own history in technology and law to inform his policy positions.
