The 2026 Contender
Darden Copeland is the Democratic Party candidate running for the U.S. House to represent Tennessee's 7th Congressional District in the general election on November 3, 2026. He advanced from the Democratic primary in August 2026, positioning himself as a political outsider tired of politicians who are more interested in partisan fights than in fighting for their constituents. Originally from North Carolina, Copeland moved to Nashville in 2008, where he lives with his wife and two children. His campaign themes focus on making healthcare more affordable, investing in clean energy, and bringing a practical, results-oriented approach to Washington.
The Professional Persuader
Before becoming a candidate himself, Copeland built a career shaping public opinion for others. He
is the founder and CEO of the Calvert Street Group, a national public affairs firm based in Nashville. The firm specializes in managing complex, high-stakes campaigns for businesses, trade associations, and other groups, particularly in areas like land use and energy infrastructure. An older profile of his work noted that his firm specializes in overcoming "NIMBY" (Not In My Back Yard) opposition for controversial projects such as landfills, rock quarries, and casinos by creating the appearance of grassroots citizen support. This work has involved executing campaigns across 46 states and Canada, making him an expert in navigating the intersection of business, politics, and community sentiment.
A Career Forged in Campaigns
Copeland’s path began not in corporate boardrooms but on the political trail. Early in his career, he served as a campaign manager and political strategist on several congressional and presidential campaigns. This experience in grassroots organizing and electoral communications laid the groundwork for his later professional life. After his interest in party politics waned, he transitioned his skills to the corporate world, eventually founding the Calvert Street Group in 2009. However, he has remained deeply engaged in local Nashville issues, leading several high-profile preservation campaigns to save landmarks like the historic Tennessee State Prison and RCA Studio A. He also serves on the board of Historic Nashville, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the city's unique architectural places.
From Strategist to Candidate
Copeland's run for Congress marks a significant shift from a behind-the-scenes operator to a public figure. His entire career has been built on understanding and molding public opinion, and now he’s putting those skills to the ultimate test with his own name on the ballot. His platform reflects a blend of his professional and personal life, advocating for policies that support working families while also emphasizing his experience with complex regulatory environments. Beyond his professional life, he is an active community member, serving as an Elder at his church and coaching his kids' sports teams. This combination of a high-powered professional background and deep community roots forms the foundation of his appeal to voters.
