A Life in National Security
Long before entering the political arena, Tony Sabio built a decades-long career inside the nation's security apparatus. Born in San Juan to a Puerto Rican mother and Filipino father, his life of service began in the U.S. Navy, where he served from 1996 to 2002. Following his military service, he joined the U.S. Secret Service in 2007, where his assignments included protecting President George W. Bush. He later transitioned to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), serving on the Global Response Staff. This extensive background in high-stakes environments forms the core of his political identity, framing him as a hands-on security expert rather than a traditional politician. His campaign materials frequently emphasize that this experience taught
him about leadership, discipline, and decisive action under pressure.
From Federal Service to Private Sector
After leaving the CIA, Sabio moved into the private sector, founding a small security company focused on counterintelligence. This transition allowed him to apply his government expertise in a corporate context, managing complex operations and security challenges. An event that gained him media attention was a private extraction he reportedly conducted during the war in Ukraine, where he rescued a U.S. national. He also briefly served as the interim Town Manager for Purcellville, Virginia, giving him a short but direct entry into local governance and budget management. This mix of federal, private, and municipal experience is what Sabio presents as a well-rounded foundation for tackling national issues. He has also been a writer for Law Enforcement Today and is involved with veterans' groups like the American Legion.
The Political Platform
Sabio is running as a Republican in the November 3, 2026, general election. He identifies himself as a "Reagan-style conservative" focused on results over rhetoric. His platform rests on several key pillars, including strengthening national security, promoting economic growth, and achieving energy independence. A major priority for Sabio is the expansion of nuclear energy, proposing small modular reactors to power data centers and bolster the energy grid. On immigration, he supports securing the border while also expressing support for reform measures like the bipartisan Dignity Act of 2025. He generally advocates for a smaller government role in the economy, stating, "I'm a free market, less government type of person." His campaign focuses on appealing to what he calls "common sense" stances designed to attract voters from across the political spectrum.
An Uphill Battle in Virginia's 8th
Sabio's challenge is a formidable one. He is running to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District, an area encompassing Arlington, Alexandria, and parts of Fairfax County that is considered one of the most reliably Democratic districts in the state. His opponent is the popular six-term Democratic incumbent, Don Beyer. This isn't Sabio's first foray into local politics; he ran an unsuccessful campaign for the Fairfax County School Board in 2023, where he focused on school safety, parental rights, and mental health resources. Despite the long odds, Sabio's campaign is framed as a "mission" to bring a different kind of leadership to a district deeply connected to the federal government and the nation's defense industry.
