From Alabama Roots to Ohio Business
Cleophus Dulaney’s story begins not in Ohio, but in Birmingham, Alabama, where he grew up. His path eventually led him to central Ohio, where he has established himself as a longtime Columbus-area resident and entrepreneur. Before entering the political arena, Dulaney's career was rooted in the private sector as a small business owner. His professional experience includes owning and operating several ventures, including two furniture businesses and a home flooring company, giving him a background deeply connected to local commerce rather than professional politics. This identity as a businessman from outside the political establishment has become a central pillar of his public persona and campaign messaging.
A Second Run for Congress
The 2026 election cycle is not Dulaney's
first foray into federal politics. He previously ran for the same U.S. House seat in 2020 but did not advance past the primary. Undeterred, he returned for a second attempt and successfully secured the Republican nomination on May 5, 2026. This victory placed him on the general election ballot for November 3, 2026, setting up a direct challenge to the district's incumbent. His persistence highlights a clear determination to enter the political sphere, and his primary win marks the most significant milestone in his political career to date. He now faces the task of convincing a broader electorate that his business-first background is what Washington needs.
An Outsider's Platform
Dulaney is running on a platform that directly reflects his outsider status. In his campaign messaging, he argues that there is "too much noise and not enough listening" in modern politics and criticizes what he calls a "permanent class of insiders." His policy priorities are centered on kitchen-table economic issues. He emphasizes affordability, pledging to tackle the high costs of groceries, rent, and prescription drugs through measures like allowing Medicare to negotiate prices and providing targeted tax relief for working families. Furthermore, Dulaney advocates for job creation through investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, and apprenticeship programs, positioning a four-year degree as just one of several paths to a successful career. His agenda is built around the promise of bringing a practical, business-oriented mindset to solve problems he believes career politicians have failed to address.
The Challenge in a Blue District
While securing the Republican nomination was a key victory, Dulaney's career record in politics faces its biggest test in the general election. He is challenging Representative Joyce Beatty, a long-serving and prominent Democrat, in Ohio's 3rd Congressional District. The district, which is centered on Columbus and inner Franklin County, is considered a Democratic stronghold. Recent election results show a significant lean towards the Democratic party; for instance, the district was carried by large margins in the 2022 and 2024 Senate races. Political analysts consider Dulaney a long shot, noting that a victory would likely require a massive national political wave in his party's favor. His candidacy pits his message of economic pragmatism against the district's deep-seated voting history and his opponent's established political career.
