From Mississippi to the Hollywood Hills
Larry A. Thompson’s story begins not under the California sun, but in Mississippi, where he was born, raised, and educated. After earning his law degree from the University of Mississippi, he drove to Hollywood in 1968 to chase a career in show business. His legal background provided the perfect entry point. He started as in-house counsel for Capitol Records, where he reportedly found himself in the unique position of negotiating contracts for each of the Beatles as the iconic band went their separate ways. This early experience in the high-stakes world of entertainment law set the stage for a long and varied career. From 1968 to 1974, Thompson also served in the United States Army Reserve's Judge Advocate General's Corps.
An Entertainment Industry Power Player
Thompson quickly moved
from corporate law to becoming a major force in his own right. He established the Larry A. Thompson Organization, a talent management and production company that has left a significant mark on Hollywood. Over the decades, he has managed the careers of over 200 stars and produced a steady stream of content, including dozens of television movies, five feature films, and multiple TV series and specials. His work has earned industry recognition, with his productions receiving nominations for Emmys, a Golden Globe, and winning awards like the Christopher Award and the Wilbur Award. This background as a dealmaker and businessman, responsible for creating jobs and managing complex projects, now forms the core of his political pitch to voters.
The Pivot to Politics
While his career was in entertainment, Thompson has been involved in Republican politics for decades, including co-chairing a past presidential campaign in California and receiving a Medal of Merit from President Ronald Reagan. After unsuccessful congressional runs in 2020 and 2024, Thompson is again on the ballot for the November 3, 2026, general election. He is running as a Republican to represent California's 32nd Congressional District, a seat currently held by a long-term Democratic incumbent. Thompson frames himself as a “citizen candidate,” not a career politician, who believes his experience solving problems in the private sector is what’s needed to fix a divided Washington.
What He Stands For in 2026
In his campaign for Congress, Larry Thompson is focusing on several key issues he believes are top of mind for voters in his district. He advocates for restoring public safety with more support for law enforcement, increasing affordability for families struggling with inflation, and securing the border. He presents himself as an “independently-minded Republican” who wants to find common ground rather than engage in partisan fighting. His platform also includes reducing government regulations on small businesses, protecting Social Security and Medicare, and bringing a new sense of accountability to government. By emphasizing practical solutions and his background as a problem-solver, he hopes to persuade voters that it is time for a representative with a different kind of experience.
