Local Roots and a Teacher's Perspective
Brian Shaver is a lifelong resident of Northwest Ohio, born and raised in Fostoria, where he still lives with his wife, Elizabeth, and daughter, Genevieve, on a small family farm. His career has been deeply embedded in the community, primarily as a public servant and educator. For years, Shaver has been a social studies teacher at Fostoria Junior/Senior High School. This role has placed him at the heart of the community, educating its next generation. His work in education extends to union leadership, where he has served as the head of the Fostoria Education Association, gaining experience in negotiation and advocacy. His educational background includes a bachelor's degree from Bluffton University and a master's in Educational Leadership from Bowling
Green State University.
From City Council to a Congressional Run
Shaver's political career began at the local level. He has served on the Fostoria City Council for over a decade, currently holding the position of Council President. This extensive experience in municipal government has shaped his approach to public service, focusing on practical solutions and accountability. In 2026, Shaver made the decision to take his political career to the next level. He entered the Democratic primary for Ohio's 5th Congressional District, a sprawling area of northwest Ohio. On May 5, 2026, he emerged victorious from a four-candidate field, securing the nomination. This victory set him up for a general election contest against long-serving Republican incumbent Bob Latta, who has held the seat since 2007.
A Platform of 'People Over Partisanship'
Shaver has built his congressional campaign around a central theme of putting "people over partisanship." He argues that representatives should be more present and accountable to their constituents. His platform includes a strong focus on government reform, advocating for term limits, stricter campaign finance laws, and new rules to prevent elected officials from profiting from their positions. He also emphasizes tackling what he calls the "affordability crisis," pointing to the rising costs of housing, healthcare, groceries, and utilities as key issues for Ohio families. In public statements, he has stressed the importance of leaving personal views at the door to represent all residents of the district, regardless of their political affiliation.
The Challenge Ahead
As the Democratic challenger in a district that has been reliably Republican for many years, Shaver faces a significant electoral challenge. His campaign strategy appears to focus on grassroots engagement, connecting with voters across the district's many counties and holding town hall events to increase his availability and contrast his style with that of the incumbent. By positioning himself as a common-sense civil servant with deep local roots and a working-class perspective, Shaver is betting that voters are ready for a new voice. His biography as a teacher and local council president is central to this pitch, framing him not as a career politician, but as a community member stepping up to serve on a larger stage.
