Activate Battery Saver Mode
This is the single most effective and easiest step you can take. Both Windows and macOS have a power-saving mode designed to automatically conserve energy when you're not plugged in. On Windows, this is often called "Battery Saver" or "Energy Saver,"
and it works by limiting background activity and sometimes dimming the screen. On a MacBook, it's called "Low Power Mode." You can typically set it to turn on automatically when your battery hits a certain percentage, like 20%, but for a long day away from an outlet, turning it on from the start is your best bet.
Dim Your Screen Brightness
Your laptop's display is one of its most power-hungry components. Running it at full brightness can drain your battery significantly faster than you might think. Unless you're working in direct sunlight, you likely don't need it maxed out. Reducing the brightness to a comfortable 50-60% level is a simple tweak that can add a surprising amount of runtime to your day. Many modern laptops also feature adaptive brightness, which automatically adjusts the screen based on ambient light, further optimizing power use.
Manage Background Apps and Processes
Even when you're not actively using them, many applications run in the background, syncing data, checking for updates, and consuming power. Take a moment to identify and close programs you don't need. On both Windows and macOS, the Activity Monitor or Task Manager can show you which apps are using the most CPU and energy. Closing unnecessary browser tabs, quitting game launchers, and pausing cloud sync services can significantly reduce this hidden drain. Also, be mindful of apps that launch automatically on startup and disable any you don't need running all the time.
Tweak Your Display Settings
Beyond just brightness, other display settings can impact battery life. If your laptop has a high-refresh-rate screen (like 120Hz or 144Hz), switching it to a standard 60Hz when on battery will conserve a noticeable amount of power. High refresh rates are great for gaming or smooth scrolling, but they make the display work harder. Similarly, using a dark mode or dark theme can reduce power consumption, especially on laptops with OLED screens where black pixels are turned off entirely.
Disconnect Unused Peripherals
Anything you plug into your laptop draws power from it. This includes external hard drives, webcams, USB hubs, and even your smartphone. If you're not actively using a peripheral, unplug it. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi also consume energy as they search for and maintain connections. If you're working offline on a document, turning on Airplane Mode is a quick way to disable all wireless radios and save a bit more juice.
Pay Attention to Heat
Heat is a battery's enemy, both for short-term efficiency and long-term health. When your laptop gets hot, its cooling fans have to work harder, which consumes more power. Furthermore, high temperatures accelerate the chemical degradation inside a lithium-ion battery. Ensure your laptop's ventilation ports aren't blocked. Avoid using it on soft surfaces like a bed or couch, which can trap heat. A cool-running laptop is a more efficient laptop.
Mind Your Long-Term Battery Health
While the tips above help you last through the day, good habits can extend your battery's overall lifespan. Lithium-ion batteries degrade faster when kept at extreme charge levels. Avoid leaving your laptop plugged in at 100% all the time, and try not to let it drain completely to 0% regularly. Many manufacturers now include battery care tools that can limit charging to 80% to reduce wear. Keeping the charge between 20% and 80% is a widely recommended practice for preserving battery health for years to come.
