Why Your Body Needs Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays a fundamental role in your health, primarily by helping your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, two minerals crucial for building and maintaining strong bones. Without enough of it, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen, leading

Beyond bone health, vitamin D supports muscle function and the immune system, and emerging research continues to explore its role in protecting against a variety of other health issues, from heart disease to certain infections. Your body produces it naturally when your skin is exposed to sunlight, but many people don't get enough through sun and diet alone.
Are You at Risk for Deficiency?
Several factors can increase your risk of having low vitamin D levels. People living in northern latitudes receive less sun exposure, especially during the fall and winter months. Older adults are also at higher risk, as the skin's ability to produce vitamin D declines with age. Individuals with darker skin tones have more melanin, which reduces the skin's ability to produce vitamin D from sunlight. Other risk factors include having a body mass index over 30, as excess body fat can sequester the vitamin, and certain medical conditions like Crohn's disease or celiac disease that affect fat absorption. Common symptoms of deficiency can be vague, including fatigue, bone and back pain, muscle weakness, or mood changes.
Should You Get Tested?
Given the risks of deficiency, it might seem logical for everyone to get tested. However, many health organizations do not recommend routine screening for the general population. A simple blood test, which measures the 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, is the best way to determine your status. Testing is typically reserved for those who are at high risk of deficiency or are showing clear symptoms. Blindly taking high-dose supplements without knowing your levels can be risky. If you have risk factors or are concerned about your intake, the best first step is to talk to your healthcare provider. They can assess your individual situation and determine if a test is necessary before recommending a supplement regimen.
Decoding the Dosage: How Much Is Enough?
Getting the dose right is critical. For most adults up to age 70, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) is 600 international units (IU) per day. For adults over 70, the recommendation increases to 800 IU daily. While these amounts are sufficient for many, your doctor might recommend a different dose based on your blood levels and health conditions. It's equally important to know the upper limit. Taking more than 4,000 IU per day over a long period can be harmful unless specifically advised by a doctor. Excess vitamin D can cause a buildup of calcium in the blood, a condition called hypercalcemia, which can lead to nausea, weakness, kidney stones, and heart issues.
Choosing Your Supplement: D2 vs. D3
When you walk down the supplement aisle, you'll see two main forms of vitamin D: D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). Vitamin D2 is derived from plant sources, while D3 is the type your body produces from sunlight and is also found in animal-based foods like fatty fish and egg yolks. While both can increase vitamin D levels in your blood, most research suggests that D3 is more effective at raising and maintaining those levels for a longer period. This is because D3 binds more efficiently to proteins in your blood that transport the vitamin throughout your body. For this reason, many healthcare providers recommend D3 supplements over D2.
