1. The Content Is A Little Too Perfect
Perfection is a red flag. In images, this manifests as impossibly smooth skin, unnaturally symmetrical faces, or backgrounds that look like a cinematic movie set. With text, it often appears as flawless grammar and an overly structured, formal tone. While
humans make typos and vary their sentence structure, AI models often default to a polished, uniform style that can feel sterile and impersonal. This relentless perfection can be a sign that you're not reading the work of a person, but the output of a probability algorithm.
2. Uncanny Physical Details Are Just 'Off'
This is the classic tell for AI images, and it persists even as the technology improves. AI generators still struggle with complex, variable anatomy. Look for inconsistencies in hands and fingers (too many or too few), teeth that look strange, or mismatched earrings. Other visual giveaways include bizarre distortions in the background, nonsensical text on signs or clothing, and inconsistent lighting where shadows don't match the light source. In videos, watch for unnatural facial movements, jerky motions, or a strange lack of blinking.
3. The Writing Lacks Personal Experience
AI can summarize information, but it can't live a life. A key clue is the absence of genuine anecdotes, sensory details, or original analysis. AI-generated text often feels like a summary of summaries, presenting facts without the deeper context or unique perspective that comes from lived experience. If a product review describes features but not how it felt to use the product, or a travel blog lists landmarks without any personal stories, be skeptical. This lack of a human touch often results in content that is generic and hollow.
4. Repetitive Language and Structure
Humans naturally vary their word choice and sentence patterns to keep writing interesting. AI models, on the other hand, often fall into repetitive loops. You might notice the same phrases or sentence structures appearing multiple times. For example, an AI might start several consecutive paragraphs with similar transitional phrases or overuse a particular buzzword. This can also manifest as a heavy reliance on lists and rigid subheadings, even when the topic doesn't naturally call for such a structured format.
5. A Strange or Inconsistent Tone
While some AI content is consistently flat, another giveaway is a tone that shifts abruptly or doesn't match the subject matter. An article might swing from highly formal to oddly casual, or a video's audio might have a flat, emotionless delivery during a moment that should be exciting or serious. This happens because the AI is stitching together different patterns from its training data without a true understanding of the emotional context. In AI-generated audio, this can sound like a mechanical rhythm and an absence of the small, natural breaths and mouth sounds humans make.
6. The Creator Has No Digital Footprint
When you encounter a piece of content, investigate the source. Is the author a real person with a history of writing on the topic? Does their social media profile look authentic, with a history of interactions, or does it feel like a hollow shell created last week? A lack of provenance—a clear history of the artist or writer—is a major red flag. A reverse image search can also be helpful; if a photo is circulating widely but has no connection to a reputable news agency or photographer, it merits caution.
7. It Regurgitates Instead of Analyzing
AI models are trained on vast datasets of existing information. As a result, their output is often a sophisticated remix of what's already been said. The content might be factually correct but lacks any novel insight or critical analysis. It tells you what happened but struggles to explain why it matters. If you read an entire article and feel like you've only encountered a collection of generic statements and surface-level facts without a unique argument, you may be looking at the work of an AI.
