The Obvious Sign: It Dies Way Too Fast
This is the most common and noticeable symptom. You remember the days when your laptop could last for hours on a single charge, but now you’re scrambling for an outlet in under an hour. All rechargeable batteries degrade over time through charge cycles.
A typical lithium-ion laptop battery can handle between 300 and 1,000 full charge cycles before its capacity drops significantly, which usually takes two to five years. When your runtime is a fraction of what it once was, it means the battery's ability to hold a charge has diminished, and its end is near.
Unexpected Shutdowns Are a Red Flag
If your laptop suddenly powers off without any low-battery warning, a failing battery is a likely culprit. This often happens even when the battery meter indicates there's still 20%, 30%, or even more charge left. As a battery ages, its ability to provide a stable voltage becomes compromised. When you perform a demanding task, the degraded battery can't supply the necessary power, causing the system to shut down instantly to protect its components. These sudden outages can also lead to unsaved work and potential data corruption.
Your Operating System Is Telling You
Modern operating systems are quite good at monitoring hardware health. Both Windows and macOS have built-in diagnostics that keep an eye on your battery. On a MacBook, you might see a “Service Recommended” status under the Battery settings. On Windows 11, you can generate a detailed battery report. To do this, open the Command Prompt, type `powercfg /batteryreport`, and press Enter. This creates an HTML file that shows you the battery's original “Design Capacity” versus its current “Full Charge Capacity.” A significant drop between these two numbers is concrete proof of battery wear.
It’s Getting Unusually Hot
While it's normal for a laptop to get warm, a failing battery can generate excessive heat. As the internal cells degrade, their electrical resistance increases. This means the battery has to work harder to power your device, and that extra effort is converted into heat. You might notice the bottom of the laptop is hot to the touch, especially around the battery's location. The internal fans may also run constantly at high speed in a futile attempt to cool things down. This isn't just bad for the battery; prolonged high temperatures can damage other internal components of your laptop.
There Are Problems With Charging
A healthy battery should charge smoothly and consistently. If you notice strange charging behavior, it’s a strong indicator of a problem. This can manifest in several ways. Perhaps it takes much longer to reach a full charge than it used to, or maybe it gets stuck at a certain percentage and never reaches 100%. In other cases, the laptop may only power on when it’s connected to the AC adapter and dies the instant you unplug it. These issues point to a battery that can no longer properly accept or hold a charge.
The Critical Sign: Physical Swelling
This is the most urgent warning sign and presents a serious safety hazard. As a lithium-ion battery fails, the chemical reactions inside can produce gas, causing the battery pack to swell and bloat. You might notice the laptop case bulging, the trackpad being pushed upwards, or the keyboard looking warped. The device may no longer sit flat on a table. If you see any signs of physical swelling, stop using and charging the laptop immediately. A swollen battery is a fire risk and can potentially rupture or explode. Do not attempt to puncture or remove it yourself; take it to a qualified professional for safe removal and replacement.
