Scrutinize the Language and Tone
AI-generated text can often feel a little off. Look for writing that is plausible but lacks depth or specific details. It might be overly formal, repetitive, or use phrases like "in conclusion" or "it is important to note" too frequently. AI models can produce
fluent, authoritative-sounding text that is entirely wrong, a phenomenon known as "hallucination". These fabrications can include fake statistics, non-existent studies, or quotes that were never said. The prose might also contain subtle inconsistencies, where a claim made in one paragraph is contradicted later on. While human writing can have errors, AI text often has a unique combination of confidence and vagueness.
Verify Every Factual Claim
Treat AI-generated content as an unverified first draft, not a final source. The most important step is to isolate and check every material claim, especially numbers, dates, names, and major assertions. If the text cites sources, do not just check if the source exists—verify that the article or study actually says what the AI claims it does. AI models are known to invent plausible-looking but completely fake citations and URLs. For any significant claim, try to find at least two independent, reliable sources to corroborate it. If a claim references vague authorities like "studies show" or "experts agree" without naming them, be extra skeptical and either find the original source or dismiss the claim.
For Images: Look for Telltale Flaws
AI image generators have improved dramatically, but they still make common, recognizable mistakes. The most famous is anatomical inaccuracy, particularly with hands and fingers; look for extra digits, unnatural joints, or distorted limbs. Faces can also be a giveaway, with asymmetrical eyes or skin that looks too perfect and glossy. Another major flaw is text. AI struggles to render coherent letters and words inside an image, often producing garbled, misspelled, or nonsensical text on signs, labels, or books. Finally, examine the background for objects that seem to melt into each other, inconsistent lighting, or bizarre shadows that defy physics.
Use Reverse Image Search and Check Metadata
If you are suspicious of an image, one of the quickest checks is a reverse image search. Tools like Google Images or TinEye can show you where else the image has appeared online. This can reveal if a photo is old and being re-contextualized, or if it is part of a known set of AI-generated fakes. For a more technical check, you can sometimes examine an image file’s metadata. By right-clicking a file and selecting “Properties” or “Get Info,” you may find information about the software used to create or edit the image, which can sometimes point to an AI generator. Some platforms are also introducing invisible watermarks or metadata to explicitly label content as AI-generated.
Use AI Detection Tools, But With Caution
A number of AI detection tools are available that analyze text and predict the probability it was written by a machine. However, their reliability is a major point of debate. Independent tests show accuracy rates vary widely, often dropping significantly when content has been edited or paraphrased by a human. These tools are also known to produce "false positives," incorrectly flagging human-written text as AI-generated, a problem that disproportionately affects non-native English speakers. For these reasons, an AI detector's score should be treated as a signal for further investigation, not as a definitive verdict. Never rely on a single tool's score to make a final judgment.
