The Entire Digital World
Virtually every aspect of modern communication falls under the Commerce Committee's purview. Its jurisdiction covers telecommunications, meaning it oversees the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the agency that regulates everything from your cell phone service and broadband internet to radio and television broadcasts. Recent legislative efforts have focused on topics like data privacy, the impact of social media on children, and ensuring the U.S. remains competitive in new technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing. When senators debate how to regulate Big Tech, protect user data, or manage the rollout of 5G, those conversations happen here. This makes the committee a central battleground for shaping the rules of our digital
lives.
Everything That Moves
If you travel by plane, train, or automobile, the Commerce Committee has a hand in your journey. It possesses sweeping authority over all aspects of transportation. This includes oversight of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for air travel, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for vehicle safety, and federal railway and pipeline regulations. The committee is also responsible for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the safety of inland waterways. From setting safety standards for new cars and investigating airline mishaps to funding highway safety programs and regulating freight shipping, the committee's decisions directly impact how Americans move safely and efficiently across the country.
The Final Frontier and the Deepest Oceans
The committee's influence extends from the stars to the sea floor. It is the primary overseer of the nation's key scientific bodies, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This gives it a powerful voice in the future of space exploration, both governmental and commercial. But its reach doesn't stop there. It also has jurisdiction over the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which manages marine fisheries, predicts the weather, and conducts climate research. The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), agencies that drive American research and innovation, also fall under its control. This makes the committee a crucial hub for funding and directing the course of American scientific discovery.
The Products in Your Home
Beyond the vast domains of tech and transport, the committee's power extends directly into the American marketplace and home. It has jurisdiction over interstate commerce and consumer protection, giving it oversight of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). These agencies are responsible for everything from fighting unfair business practices and monopolies to recalling dangerous products like faulty toys or hazardous appliances. The committee even has jurisdiction over professional and amateur sports, which is why it has been involved in debates over college athlete compensation and the governance of Olympic sports.
