Online and Mail-In Registration
For many Nebraskans, the most convenient ways to register are online or by mail. The deadline for both methods is the same: your application must be submitted online or postmarked by Friday, October 16, 2026. This is also the deadline for registering at a state agency, like the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If you are registering by mail for the first time, you may need to include a copy of a current photo ID or a document like a recent utility bill or bank statement that shows your name and address. To register online, you can use the state's official portal. This option is available 24/7 until midnight on the deadline.
Last-Chance In-Person Registration
If you miss the October 16 deadline, you still have one final opportunity to register. Nebraska offers an extended in-person
registration period at your local county clerk or election commissioner's office. The absolute final deadline to register to vote for the general election is 6 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026. This option is only available by showing up in person at the correct county office; it cannot be done online or by mail after October 16. This later deadline provides a crucial safety net for citizens who need a few extra days to complete the process.
How to Check Your Registration Status
Not sure if you’re already registered or if your information is current? Before you do anything else, it's wise to check. The Nebraska Secretary of State offers an online 'Voter Check' tool that allows you to verify your registration status, check your polling place, and see the status of a requested mail-in ballot. Using this tool can save you time and prevent any surprises on Election Day. If you've moved or changed your name since the last time you voted, you will need to update your registration. You can do this using the same methods and adhering to the same deadlines as a new registration.
Who is Eligible to Vote?
To register and vote in Nebraska, you must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of the state. You must also be at least 18 years old on or before the General Election Day, which is November 3, 2026. There is no minimum residency period, meaning you can register as soon as you become a Nebraska resident. Individuals who have completed the full terms of a felony sentence, including any probation or parole, are eligible to register and vote. You cannot vote if you are currently serving a felony sentence or have been declared mentally incompetent by a court.
What You'll Need on Election Day
Once you are successfully registered, remember that Nebraska requires voters to present a valid photo ID at the polls, whether voting early in person or on Election Day. Accepted forms of ID include a Nebraska driver's license or state ID, a U.S. passport, a military ID, or a student ID from a Nebraska college, among others. Having your ID ready will ensure a smooth voting experience. The General Election is on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with polls open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mountain Time.
