The Main Deadline: October 23
For those who prefer to plan ahead, the primary deadline for voter registration is Friday, October 23, 2026. This is the last day your county clerk can receive your registration application online or by mail for you to be automatically sent a mail-in ballot. You can complete the process online at vote.utah.gov, which requires a valid Utah driver's license or state ID. Alternatively, you can print a paper form and mail it to your county clerk's office, ensuring it arrives by the 5:00 p.m. deadline on October 23. Meeting this deadline is the smoothest path to receiving your ballot in the mail without extra steps.
The Procrastinator's Friend: Same-Day Registration
If you miss the October 23 deadline, don't worry—you can still vote. Utah offers same-day registration, allowing eligible residents to register
and vote at the same time. This option is available during the in-person early voting period, which begins on October 20, and on Election Day, November 3. To use this option, you must visit an early voting location or an Election Day vote center. You will be required to show valid identification and proof of residency, and you will cast a provisional ballot, which is counted once your registration is verified by election officials.
What You Need to Register
To be eligible to vote in Utah, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old by Election Day, and have been a resident of Utah for at least 30 days prior to the election. If registering online, a Utah driver's license or state ID is necessary. For same-day registration, you will need to provide two forms of identification that prove both who you are and where you live. Acceptable ID can include a current Utah driver's license, a U.S. passport, or a tribal ID card. Proof of residency can be a recent utility bill, a bank statement, or a government-issued check or document showing your name and current address.
How to Check Your Status
Already registered? It’s always a good idea to confirm that your information is current, especially if you have moved or changed your name. You can quickly verify your registration status online through the official state portal at vote.utah.gov. This tool allows you to see the address you have on file and your party affiliation. Taking a moment to check ensures your mail-in ballot will be sent to the correct address. Ballots for the 2026 general election begin being mailed to all active, registered voters on October 13.
Special Circumstances: Students and Felons
College students attending school in Utah can choose to register to vote using either their campus address or their permanent home address, but they can only be registered in one location. If you have a felony conviction, your right to vote is automatically restored in Utah upon release from incarceration, even if you are on parole or probation. You simply need to re-register to participate in elections. The only exception is for individuals convicted of treason or a crime against the elective franchise, whose rights must be specifically restored.
