The Final Countdown: Register Online by Midnight
For the vast majority of Oregonians, the fastest and most convenient way to register to vote is online. The deadline for online registration is 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time tonight, October 13. To use the state's My Vote portal, you will need a valid Oregon driver's license, permit, or state ID card. If you don't have one of those, you can still start the process online but will need to print, sign, and deliver your registration card to your county elections office by the end of business hours today. You can visit OregonVotes.gov to get started, check your existing registration status, or update your address. It's crucial to ensure your information is current so your ballot is mailed to the correct address.
Prefer Paper? In-Person and Mail-In Options
If you prefer a paper form or need to register
in person, you still have options, but time is of the essence. You can pick up a voter registration card at county elections offices, public libraries, or post offices. To meet the deadline, your mail-in registration must be postmarked by today, October 13. For those who want the certainty of handing it in directly, you can deliver the completed form to your county elections office. Some county offices are offering extended hours today to accommodate last-minute registrations; for instance, the Clackamas County Elections office will be open until 7 p.m. to assist voters. This ensures that anyone who makes the effort today can successfully register for the upcoming election.
The Oregon Advantage: Are You Already Registered?
Oregon is unique for its Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) system, often called 'Motor Voter', which was the first of its kind in the nation. This system automatically registers eligible citizens to vote when they complete a qualifying transaction at the DMV, such as obtaining or renewing a driver's license, unless they choose to opt out. When you interact with the DMV and provide proof of U.S. citizenship, your information is forwarded to the Secretary of State. You will later receive a notification in the mail, which gives you the option to select a political party or decline registration. If you've had a recent DMV transaction, you may already be registered. Before you rush to fill out a new form, it is highly recommended to first check your registration status online at the Oregon Secretary of State's website.
What Happens If You Miss Today's Deadline?
If you are a new voter and miss the October 13 deadline, you will unfortunately not be able to vote in the November 3, 2026, general election. Oregon does not offer same-day registration for first-time voters. However, there is a crucial exception for those already registered. If you are currently registered to vote in Oregon but need to update your address, you can do so all the way up until 8 p.m. on Election Day and still cast your ballot. If you do miss the deadline for new registration, officials still encourage you to register anyway. Doing so will ensure you are on the voter rolls and ready to participate in all subsequent elections without any last-minute stress.
