The 2026 Deadlines You Can't Miss
To participate in the November 3, 2026, General Election, you must be registered to vote in South Carolina. The deadlines are staggered based on how you choose to register, and they are not flexible. For most, the final cutoff is Sunday, October 4. Here are the specific dates you need to know: In-person registration must be completed by Friday, October 2, 2026. Online registration, along with registration by email or fax, must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2026. Registration forms sent by mail must be postmarked no later than Monday, October 5, 2026. These dates are firm, and missing them means you will not be able to cast a ballot in this election cycle.
Register Online: The Quickest Way
The fastest and most convenient way for most people to register is online
through the official state portal, scVOTES.gov. To use the online system, you must have a valid South Carolina driver's license or an identification card issued by the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). It's also crucial that your address on file with the DMV is current, as this is the address that will be used for your voter registration. If you've recently moved, you must update your address with the DMV before attempting to register to vote online. The entire process only takes a few minutes, and you'll get immediate confirmation that your application has been submitted before the October 4 deadline.
Register by Mail or In Person
If you prefer a more traditional method or don't have a valid S.C. DMV ID, you can register by mail or in person. To register by mail, you can download and print a voter registration form from the scVOTES.gov website. After filling it out completely, mail it to your county's board of voter registration. It must be postmarked by Monday, October 5, 2026. You can also submit this form via email or fax, but it must be received by the October 4 deadline. For in-person registration, you can visit your county voter registration and elections office. Most offices close for this purpose at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2. You can also register at other state agencies, like the DMV, when accessing their services.
What You Need to Register and Vote
To be eligible to register in South Carolina, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before Election Day, a resident of the county where you are registering, and not be incarcerated for a felony conviction. When you go to vote, whether during the early voting period (October 19 to October 31) or on Election Day, you will need to present a valid photo ID. Accepted forms of identification include a South Carolina driver's license, a DMV-issued ID card, a U.S. passport, a federal military ID, or a South Carolina voter registration card that includes your photo. If you do not have one of these, you may still be able to vote by signing an affidavit explaining your 'reasonable impediment' and casting a provisional ballot.
Already Registered? Double-Check Your Status
Even if you think you are already registered, it is always a good idea to verify your status before the deadlines pass. You can check your voter registration information instantly online at the MySCVOTES portal. This is especially important if you have moved within the state, changed your name, or have not voted in several years. State election officials periodically update voter rolls and may move inactive voters to a list that requires them to confirm their details. Taking 60 seconds to check your registration can save you significant trouble at the polls and ensures your information is current, your polling place is correct, and you are ready to vote.
