As Christmas week is on and the New Year 2026 is around the corner, stock market investors and enthusiasts must be confused whether the share market will
remain open or closed on January 1, 2026.
Stock Market open or closed on 1 January, 2026
The Indian stock market will remain open on Thursday, January 1, 2025, as per the official calendar released by the BSE and NSE India.
All segments, including equity, derivatives, and SLB, will also remain operational on the day. However, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain open for the morning session from 9 am to 5 pm but will be closed for the evening session from 5 pm to 11.30 pm/11.55 pm.
The equity segment of the stock markets operates on weekdays, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and any holidays declared by the Exchange in advance.
Stock Market Holidays 2026
According to the NSE and BSE holiday calendars, the markets will observe 15 full trading holidays in the upcoming calendar year, along with details of holidays that fall on weekends and the annual Muhurat Trading session. 2026 will have one more holiday than the current year.
NSE, BSE trading holidays in 2026
Equity, equity derivatives and currency derivatives markets will remain closed for a total of 15 days next year in 2026.
The first stock market holiday in 2026 is on Republic Day on January 26. Other major religious and national holidays include Holi on March 3, Ram Navami on March 26, Mahavir Jayanti on March 31 and Good Friday on April 3, respectively.
Markets will also be shut on Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Maharashtra Day on May 1 and Bakri-Id on May 28.
In the second half of the year, the stock market will remain closed on Muharram on June 26, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14 and Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. Dussehra falls on October 20, followed by Diwali Balipratipada on November 10 and Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24. The last trading holiday of the year will be on Christmas on December 25.
However, there is no mention of holiday for Diwali as it is falling on a weekend (Sunday).
Weekend holidays in 2026
Four major holidays are colliding with weekends in 2026 and therefore, it will not result in a market closure. These include Mahashivratri on February 15, Eid-Ul-Fitr on March 21, Independence Day on August 15 and Diwali Laxmi Pujan on November 8.
Muhurat Trading Holiday in 2026
Diwali Laxmi Pujan is falling on a Sunday, where the leading exchanges BSE and NSE will conduct the traditional Muhurat Trading session on November 8.
The exact timings for the special one-hour session will be announced closer to the date.
