Bank Holidays: December 26 (Friday)
Even after Christmas, banks in Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Mizoram will remain closed. Today, December 25, is Christmas. However, banks in some states like Aizawl (Mizoram), Shillong (Meghalaya), and Nagaland remain closed on December 26 because these states often observe an extended Christmas holiday, sometimes called a local or regional holiday, to allow people to continue celebrating.
Simply put, while Christmas itself is on the 25th, these regions officially give the next day off for the festival, so banks and some offices remain closed on December 26 as well.
Bank Holidays: December 27 (Saturday)
Similarly, even on 27 December, banks are closed in Nagaland (Kohima) as an extended Christmas celebration. Also, banks will be closed across India due to the 4th Saturday bank holiday.
Bank Holidays: December 28 (Sunday)
Due to the weekly holiday, banks will remain closed throughout India.
Online banking services will remain operational
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, all banks will remain closed on Christmas. This means branch-related services like cheque clearance, cash deposits or withdrawals, and other in-person banking activities will not be available. While physical branches will be closed, customers can still access essential banking services through online platforms and mobile apps. UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, and ATM services will continue to operate.
As per the RBI guidelines, bank holidays in India fall into three categories:
- Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act
- Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act and the Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday
- Banks’ Closing of Accounts
