Stock Market closing today, December 24: The benchmark Indian equity indices Sensex and Nifty closed in red territory on Wednesday, December 24, 2025,
a day before the Christmas holiday on December 25. The BSE Sensex, after hitting an intraday low of 85,342.19, ended the session at 85,408.70, down 116.14 points or 0.14 per cent. The NSE Nifty50 settled at 26,142.10, down 35.05 points or 0.13 per cent. During the day Nifty50 swung between 26,236.40 and 26,123. Sensex and Nifty opened almost flat today. The BSE Sensex started at 85,533.11, while the Nifty 50 opened at 26,170.65. Despite briefly mirroring gains in Asian peers after stronger-than-expected US growth data, equity benchmarks stayed range-bound in the holiday-shortened session as IT stock losses and persistent foreign fund outflows limited the upside, even amid resilient domestic fundamentals.
Reasons behind the drop
Here are the reasons behind the declining market:The rupee is continuously hitting a new record low, weighing heavily on market sentiments.
Foreign institutional investors have been heavy sellers since July.
A surge in IPOs this year has drained retail liquidity from the secondary market, keeping indices range-bound.
Broader market performance
In the broader markets, the Nifty Midcap 100 index tumbled 0.60 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 ended 0.28 per cent higher. According to NSE website, a total of 1,361 stocks advanced, 1,770 declined and 119 remain unchanged.
Top gainers and losers
Among Sensex firms, Indigo declined the most, by over 1.4 per cent. Sun Pharma, Asian Paints, Reliance Industries, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finserv, HCL Technologies, Infosys, SBI, ICICI Bank, Larsen and Turbo (L&T), ITC and NTPC were also among the losers.
Meanwhile, Trent, UltraTech Cement, Maruti Suzuki, Power Grid, Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M), Bajaj Finance, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Eternal were among the gainers.
52-week highs and lows
A total of 115 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 102 stocks slipped to 52-week lows during the session.
