If you are planning a bank visit today, it’s best to pause and check first. As the calendar flips through the final days of the year, many customers are left
wondering whether banks are operational this Saturday or not. Banks across India are closed today, Saturday, 27 December, as it falls on the fourth Saturday of the month. As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) norms, banks including State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Yes Bank, along with other public and private sector lenders, are not open for in-branch services today. In addition to the Saturday closure, banks are also shut in several states due to Christmas-related holidays, in line with the RBI’s state-wise bank holiday calendar. According to the central bank's holiday calendar, banks across the country remain closed on:
- Second Saturday of every month
- Fourth Saturday of every month
Banks, however, remain open on the first, third and fifth Saturdays, unless a state-specific or festival-related holiday is notified.
RBI releases bank holiday calendar for 2026
The Reserve Bank of India has already released the bank holiday calendar for 2026, listing over 160 holidays during which banks will remain closed across various parts of the country. Here is a month-wise list of bank holidays of the upcoming year:
Month-wise bank holidays in 2026
January 2026: Banks will be closed for New Year’s Day, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Thiruvalluvar Day and Republic Day on January 26. Birth anniversaries of Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose will be observed in select states.
February 2026: Closures are expected in some regions for Losar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti and statehood celebrations.
March 2026: Multiple holidays will be observed for Holi, Holika Dahan, Dhuleti, Ugadi, Eid-Ul-Fitr, Ram Navami, Mahavir Jayanti and Chapchar Kut, depending on the state.
April 2026: April 1 will be a nationwide bank holiday for annual account closing. Other holidays include Good Friday, Ambedkar Jayanti, Tamil New Year, Baisakhi, Bohag Bihu and Basava Jayanti.
May 2026: Key holidays include Labour Day (May 1), Buddha Pournima, Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti and Eid-Ul-Adha in select regions.
June 2026: Banks will be shut in some states for Muharram, Sant Guru Kabir Jayanti, Raja Sankranti and Remna Ni.
July 2026: Closures will be observed for Beh Deinkhlam, Ratha Yatra, Kharchi Puja and other regional festivals, particularly in the Northeast.
August 2026: Holidays include Independence Day (August 15), Raksha Bandhan, Parsi New Year, Onam and Milad-un-Nabi in different states.
September 2026: Ganesh Chaturthi, Janmashtami, Nuakhai, Indrajatra and regional observances will lead to multiple bank holidays.
October 2026: October will see heavy closures due to Gandhi Jayanti, Durga Puja, Dussehra, Vijayadashami, Karva Chauth and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary.
November 2026: Banks will remain closed in several states for Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj, Chhath Puja and Guru Nanak Jayanti.
December 2026: Holidays include Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Goa Liberation Day, Indigenous Faith Day, New Year’s Eve and regional remembrance days.
