Silver Price Today, April 20: Silver prices declined nearly Rs 5,000 on Monday (April 20) on the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), weighed down
by Iran’s decision to skip a second round of talks with the United States. Silver futures for May delivery on the MCX fell 1.8 per cent or Rs 4,700 to Rs 2,52,442, tracking weakness in global markets. In the international market, spot silver was down about 1 per cent (USD 0.7) at USD 80.08 as of 9:35 am. Despite the decline, prices remain nearly 6 per cent higher over the past week. Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback against six major currencies, rose 0.2 per cent to 98.3, adding pressure on precious metals by making them costlier for holders of other currencies. Geopolitical tensions also remained high after reports that the Strait of Hormuz was closed again to commercial shipping. Iran has threatened retaliation after US President Donald Trump said US forces had seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship that tried to pass through a US naval blockade. Trump also said US negotiators would head to Islamabad on Monday for talks aimed at resolving the US-Israel conflict with Iran. Oil prices surged more than 7 per cent on Monday due to rising tensions between the US and Iran, recovering after a sharp fall in the previous session. Brent crude futures were near USD 95 per barrel. Higher oil prices are typically seen as negative for gold, as they increase inflation expectations and lower the chances of interest rate cuts, which can pressure gold prices. Investors are now watching developments in the Middle East closely, as they are expected to influence the near-term direction of gold prices.
