Amazon Pay has launched UPI Biometric Authentication, allowing users to approve UPI transactions using a fingerprint or face scan without entering a PIN.
The company said it is among the first payment service providers in India to introduce biometric-based authentication for UPI payments.
The new feature enables customers to use biometric verification for transactions of up to ₹5,000 across Amazon Pay UPI services, including sending money to individuals, scanning and paying at stores, merchant payments and balance checks.
Authentication is linked to the user’s device, which the company said adds an additional layer of security as biometric data is not shareable.
According to Amazon Pay, early adoption data indicates strong user acceptance, with more than 90% of customers opting for biometric authentication for eligible peer-to-peer UPI transactions. The company said the feature is designed to reduce transaction friction and enable faster, one-handed payments.
Girish Krishnan, Director of Payments at Amazon India, said the launch aims to simplify everyday digital payments while maintaining security. He added that customer feedback so far has highlighted the speed and ease of use of biometric authentication.
The biometric authentication facility is currently available to Android users. Amazon Pay said the launch aligns with its focus on enhancing convenience and security in India’s digital payments ecosystem.
