What is the story about?
A study by Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co. Limited (ABHICL) has found that active participation in health coaching can significantly reduce preventable hospital claims and associated costs.
The peer-reviewed research, published in the medical journal Cureus, analysed anonymised data from 29,463 customers enrolled in ABHICL’s health coaching programme, delivered in partnership with Zyla Health, over the period from April 2023 to March 2024.
The study also included academic contributions from Kapil Verma, PhD (formerly IIM Kozhikode).
According to the findings, customers who remained actively engaged in the programme recorded a 31% reduction in preventable claims compared with non-engaged members. On average, each additional coaching interaction was associated with a reduction of ₹668 in preventable claim costs, while the programme delivered savings of ₹1.72 for every ₹1 invested.
The study highlighted that women participants, who made up 33% of the cohort with at least one chronic condition, saw stronger reductions in claim costs, indicating the benefits of consistent participation. Older members also showed better engagement and symptom improvement, although their claims remained higher due to healthcare needs.
ABHICL CEO Mayank Bathwal said the findings demonstrate how early risk identification and ongoing engagement can lead to better health outcomes while supporting more efficient use of healthcare resources. Khushboo Aggarwal, Founder & CEO of Zyla Health, added that prevention-led care not only improves health outcomes but also delivers measurable savings for the healthcare system.
Overall, the study documented improvements in over 7,600 symptoms among 4,272 members, with only 155 preventable hospitalisations reported across the programme. The research underscores the potential for structured, low-intensity interventions to help individuals manage chronic conditions more effectively, reducing avoidable hospital visits and related costs.
ABHICL, a joint venture between Aditya Birla Capital Ltd and Momentum Group Ltd, offers a range of health insurance products covering over 24 million lives in India. Its focus on preventive care and chronic condition management aligns with broader trends in personal healthcare spending and cost-conscious management of health risks.
