Paying income tax online has become simpler with the e-Pay Tax facility. It allows taxpayers to make direct payments electronically using multiple payment methods. The service is available on the e-Filing portal and can be accessed with or without logging into the portal.
Whether you are paying advance tax or depositing self-assessment tax, the e-Pay Tax portal offers a single platform to complete the payment electronically. The service provides five payment modes to suit different taxpayer preferences.
The facility is particularly useful for those who identify an additional tax liability while filing their Income Tax Return (ITR), even after accounting for TDS and other available tax credits.
The e-Pay Tax service is an online payment system on the Income Tax Department's e-Filing portal that enables taxpayers to pay direct taxes electronically.

To make a payment, visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal and open the e-Pay Tax section. Logged-in users can access it from the e-File menu, while other users can select the option directly from the homepage.
Taxpayers must choose the applicable tax category, select the relevant Assessment Year or Tax Year, enter the required tax details, fill in the tax amount under the appropriate heads, and then choose a preferred payment method.
Five payment modes available
Taxpayers can pay taxes through the internet banking facility of authorised banks available on the portal. After verifying the challan details, users are redirected to their bank's website to complete the transaction. Once the payment is successfully completed, the challan receipt is generated and can be accessed through the payment history section on the e-Pay Tax page.
Those holding debit cards issued by participating banks can make tax payments directly through the portal. After confirming the payment details, users need to complete authentication using their card credentials and OTP. The challan receipt becomes available once the transaction is successfully completed.
Taxpayers preferring offline payment can generate a challan online and visit an authorised bank branch to pay through cash, cheque or demand draft.
Cash payments exceeding ₹10,000 are not permitted under this mode. The Income Tax Department does not levy any transaction charges for payments made at the bank counter.
Taxpayers can also make payments through RTGS or NEFT using any bank. After generating a mandate form on the e-Filing portal, users can either visit a bank branch or complete the transfer through internet banking by adding the beneficiary details mentioned in the form. The payment is reflected on the portal once it is successfully processed.
The payment gateway option supports UPI, credit cards, debit cards and net banking. After verifying the payment details, users are redirected to the selected payment gateway to complete the transaction. Transaction charges and applicable GST may apply depending on the payment gateway or bank selected.
