ITR due date LIVE updates: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the last day for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025-26 to September 16 (Tuesday).
So far, the Income Tax Department has received over 7 crore returns, with more than 6.03 crore verified and 4 crore processed.
Taxpayers who fail to file by today risk penalties of up to ₹5,000 (capped at ₹1,000 for individuals with income up to ₹5 lakh), interest on outstanding tax dues, and delays in refund processing.
The deadline applies primarily to non-audit cases, including most salaried individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and small businesses or professionals under the presumptive taxation scheme.
To avoid penalties and ensure smooth processing, all eligible taxpayers are urged to file and verify their returns without delay.
