ASHEVILLE - In our month-long biscuit celebration, we've learned from experts what makes the best structurally sound, flavor-balanced biscuit sandwich and recognized the "biscuit renaissance" happening in Asheville.
ACT readers also voted for their favorite place to get a biscuit, including Asheville's locally owned restaurants and national chains, in our readers' choice poll.
Coming in first place is one of the early trailblazers building the city's biscuit scene: Biscuit Head.
Since 2013, Biscuit Head has served locals and attracted tourists with its massive cathead-style buttermilk drop biscuits and sandwiches.
The Asheville-founded restaurant has expanded its biscuit love across the Carolinas, with locations on Haywood Road in West Asheville,
Hendersonville Road in South Asheville, Biltmore Avenue at the Mission Hospital campus, and Church Street in Greenville, South Carolina.
Biscuit Head offers diners signature sandwiches and the freedom to create custom dishes, with options to smother biscuits with assorted toppings, gravies and jams ― be sure to take a trip to the dining room's bar for staple and signature jams and sauces.
Gluten-free and vegan biscuits are also available.
The savory signature bestseller is The Filthy Animal, prepared with fried chicken, in-house pimento cheese, bacon, scrambled eggs and gravy.
Brunch crowds may get a kick out of the Mimosa Fried Chicken Biscuit topped with sweet potato butter, sriracha slaw and a poached egg.
Create sweet memories with dishes like Biscuit Donuts, tossed in cinnamon sugar with a side of lemon curd, and the Biscuit French Toast, finished with strawberry syrup and powdered sugar.
Biscuit Head also offers its original recipes and products for home cooks. In 2022, Garden & Gun, a Charleston-based magazine publication recognizing Southern culture and craftsmanship, awarded Biscuit Head a Made in the South Award in the food category for its retail buttermilk biscuit mix.
Flour, a local eatery that recently relocated and expanded its cafe to downtown Wall Street, came in second in ACT's readers' choice biscuit poll. ButterPunk, in the River Arts District, rounded out the top three.
ButterPunk also appeared on USA TODAY's list of the nation's best sandwiches.
