Another recall has hit the Carolinas after the Food and Drug Administration issued another recall for frozen berries, this time for items sold at Walmart.
Frozen berries sold at Walmart in multiple states, including North and South Carolina, are part of an ever-growing recall due to possible E. coli.
The original recall occurred on July 3 for GreenWise-brand frozen organic blueberries. It expanded on July 29 to include GreenWise frozen mixed berries. All of the fruit was sold at Publix and came from Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A.
Here's what we know about the growing recall.
What frozen berries sold at Walmart were recalled?
The FDA has now issued a recall for Great Value Frozen berries sold in 16 states. The products have been removed from Walmart shelves, but the FDA warns that people may already
have them in their freezers.
"There are no illnesses associated with this specific product to date," said the FDA's Sept. 3 notice. "This market action is taken as a precautionary measure following traceback information of the previous recall."
Expiration dates on the products go into 2028. Here's the label people should look for:
- Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend 10 oz (including strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries). UPC: 7874211226; lot code 6040 01-6; use-by date Feb. 9, 2028.

What is E. coli?
E. coli, also known as Escherichia coli, is a bacterium that is found in many places (like the environment, foods, water, and the intestines of people and animals), and much of it can be harmless, but sometimes it makes people sick, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
People can develop diarrhea, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sepsis, and other illnesses due to E. coli.
Symptoms of E. coli
According to the CDC, people with E. coli infection will most likely have:
- Diarrhea that can be bloody or watery
- Stomach cramps that can be severe
- Some people also have vomiting or a low fever
