Following legendary country singer Dolly Parton's death on Aug. 25, a number of communities and one state have declared Sept. 25 "Dolly Parton Day" this year in her honor.
Parton, who was known for her singing, songwriting, acting and philanthropy
, died at 80 on Aug. 25 after a brief battle with cancer. Her relatives have stated that Parton died surrounded by loved ones at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.Parton's nephew, Bryan Seaver, delivered the news that his aunt had died in a lengthy statement on Instagram on Tuesday, Aug. 25, in which he said Parton "will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family."

Day, which was signed into law as an annual state holiday in California by Gov. Gavin Newsom, is also being celebrated in several other areas. Though the city of Asheville has not officially recognized the holiday, several events are being held in honor of the date.

Which cities are celebrating Dolly Parton Day?
As reported by USA TODAY, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law on Sept. 20 that establishes Sept. 25 as Dolly Parton Day in the state. Additionally, USA TODAY's list of cities confirmed to be participating include:
- Nashville, Tennessee
- Cocke County, Tennessee, as reported by Knoxville News Sentinel, part of the USA TODAY Network
- Manhattan, New York City
- New Orleans, Louisiana: New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno will present a proclamation on Friday, Director of Communications Jonah Gilmore told USA TODAY
- Portland, Oregon: Proclamation ceremony featuring Imagination Library Oregon State Director Laurie McNichols and drag performer Nicole Onoscopi on Sept. 23 (Dolly Parton Day remains Sept. 25.)
- Montgomery County, Texas
- Hays County, Texas
Asheville, Western NC Dolly Parton Day events
Though the city itself is not officially participating, several businesses in Asheville are celebrating Dolly Parton Day.
Jack of the Wood Pub, at 95 Patton Avenue, is celebrating Dolly Parton Day with a lineup of "Appalachian voices and musicians" plus Dolly-inspired dishes and cocktails beginning at 8:30 p.m.
The Grey Eagle Music Hall, at 185 Clingman Avenue, is also hosting a special musical event featuring a lineup of artists including No Man's Band, Underhill Rose, Rebekah Todd and more, with doors at 6:30 p.m. and the show beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The Whale South Slope, at 21 Buxton Avenue, is hosting an event featuring Dolly Parton music, movies, themed crafts and more from 5-9 p.m.
