ASHEVILLE - A woman crossing Patton Avenue was killed by a vehicle July 27 in Asheville, the Asheville Police Department said in a news release.
Police went to the 900 block of Patton Avenue near Florida Street to investigate a wreck at 11:29 p.m. on July 27, according to the release.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the pedestrian, later identified as 62-year-old Linda Jean Johnson of Asheville, was crossing the road from the eastbound side and was struck by a 2011 Jeep Compass traveling west.
Johnson was transported to Mission Hospital, where she later died.
Police spokesman Rick Rice declined to say whether Johnson used a crosswalk, saying that where she was crossing is part of the police investigation.
Police did not identify the
driver of the vehicle, who remained on the scene. The wreck remains under investigation. Once the investigation is complete, officers will consult with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed.
