Jesus Lastra-Perez of Buckeye is facing five felony charges after police say he shot his stepsister and killed her father.
Investigators say the shooting stemmed from a family argument just after midnight on Aug. 27.
Police wrote in charging documents that Lastra-Perez, 22, allowed officers to view a video on his phone of what happened.
The video shows multiple family members locked in a physical fight when Lastra-Perez shot one of them in the back, police say. He told officers he fired a gun to defend one of the people involved, believing her life was at risk.
Lastra-Perez continued recording as he got into an argument with another man before opening fire again, police say. He told police the man had balled his fists, was promising to "get him
back" for shooting his 17-year-old daughter, and was choking another woman involved, ignoring requests to stop.
The teenage girl was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police identified the man killed as David Washington, 36.
All of the parties involved live in the home on 214th Lane in Buckeye, police say, and Lastra-Perez is the son of Washington’s ex-wife.
Lastra-Perez faces possible charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, endangerment and unlawfully firing a gun.
A conference and preliminary hearing for the case were scheduled for Sept. 2 and 4.
