More details have been released weeks after a shooting in downtown Tucson injured nine people.
Around 2 a.m. July 19, officers with the Tucson Police Department were on a regularly scheduled patrol in the downtown area near Congress Street and Sixth Avenue when they heard multiple gunshots, the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team said in a July 29 news release.
Officers quickly found multiple people with "gunshot trauma," the release said.
At the same time, another police officer, later identified as Officer Tanner Wolverton, spotted David Leroy French, 21, running near Congress Street with a weapon, according to the release. Wolverton told French to drop his weapon, but he did not comply, the release said.
Wolverton fired at French, wounding him.
Officers took him into custody and began giving him first aid, the release said.
Detectives learned that a verbal confrontation led to French firing a handgun multiple times into a group of people, striking nine, according to the news release.
French and the injured people were taken to the hospital and were all expected to survive, the release said.
French will be taken to the Pima County Adult Detention Complex after he's released from the hospital and faces charges of aggravated assault and discharging a firearm, according to the release.
Additional charges were pending as the investigation progressed, the release said. Anyone with information was asked to contact the Pima County Sheriff's Department at 520-351-4900 or 88-CRIME to remain anonymous.
The Sheriff's Department was investigating the incident as part of the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, the release said.
Wolverton is a 7-year veteran of the Tucson Police Department, according to the release.
No officers were injured in the shooting, the police department previously confirmed.
