On the western edge of the Valley sits Surprise, often thought of as a smaller city with spring training baseball and a name with a funny background. When Flora Mae Statler founded it in 1930, she said she'd be surprised if it ever amounted to much.

But these days, the city is at the center of some of the biggest headlines and political issues across the nation.

Earlier this year, Surprise was announced as the location for an upcoming ICE detention center. Protesters quickly opposed the warehouse, so drastically that someone even tried to light it on fire. In May 2026, a controversial data center near the outskirts of the city was approved by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors despite backlash from Surprise residents.

topic that connects this rising town with America's strifes is the use of Flock cameras. Surprise recently suspended its contract with Flock and placed a local police officer on leave after possible misuse of the system.
