Mesa police officers were involved in a "critical incident" in Chandler, a day after a fatal police shooting took place in Mesa.
The scene was still active near Frye and McQueen roads, police officials reported on social media just before 8 p.m. Sept. 1.
"The public is asked to avoid the area until it has been deemed safe," the post stated.
A day earlier, on Aug. 31, Mesa police shot and killed an armed man making threats in a neighborhood near Mesa Drive and McKellips Road, according to detective Laura Cervantes.
Officers initially responded around 8:20 p.m. to the area about a man making threats with a gun in his waistband. They previously responded to similar calls regarding the same man, Cervantes said.
The man refused to cooperate with police.
As officers tried to get the man to come out of the house to speak with them, an unrelated crash involving a motorcycle and police vehicle happened behind the house.
The man was spotted over a brick wall holding a firearm, at which point a police officer fired his gun. The man was found to be dead when officers approached to detain him, according to Cervantes.
Gilbert Police Department was investigating the Aug. 31 incident as part of the East Valley Incident Response Team.
