Outfielder Jesus Sanchez officially was added to the Diamondbacks roster on Tuesday, Sept. 15, and immediately was inserted into manager Torey Lovullo’s starting lineup. Sanchez will bat seventh and serve as the designated hitter.

Sanchez, who was claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, Sept. 14, spent part of his first day with his new team visiting with some of his former teammates. Sanchez broke into the majors with the Diamondbacks’ opponent this week, the Miami Marlins, but he was traded to Houston midway through last season. The Astros dealt him to the Blue Jays in the offseason.

“I always like to play against my ex-team,” Sanchez said, speaking through interpreter Alex Arpiza, “because, obviously, they traded me and it

gives me a little extra adrenaline to do that.”

Sanchez said he was excited to be in Arizona and be inserted into the wild-card chase. He figures to get some run as the club’s designated hitter; he has always had better numbers against right-handed pitching and the Diamondbacks are in desperate need of offensive production against righties.

“I kill right-handed pitching,” Sanchez said. “Just going to continue to enjoy my style of play.”

Sanchez owns a career .775 OPS against righties, including a .781 OPS this season.

To fit Sanchez on the roster, the Diamondbacks optioned outfielder Tommy Troy to Triple-A Reno.
