A high-end hotel will be the next phase of Cannon Beach, a development in Mesa that includes a surfing beach, swimming, dining and other family entertainment.
Cole Cannon, the developer of Cannon Beach, said the hotel, a Tapestry by Hilton, will “really round out the Cannon Beach experience.”
Cannon said adding the 130-room hotel makes the project an easy vacation or staycation spot for families, because there are many activities for various ages to enjoy on the property.
“Vacation can be exhausting to shuttle kids around,” Cannon said. “This way, families can park once, stay at the hotel, and have access to so much on the property.”
Mesa does not have many options for luxury lodging, Cannon said, and there is demand for higher-end places to stay
in the city.
“Mesa is underserved in the luxury hotel market,” Cannon said. The group chose the Tapestry by Hilton flag for the project because it offers them flexibility for design and themes. Cannon said he wants the hotel to feel coastal, with a rooftop bar and a ground floor restaurant.
The hotel is expected to cost about $50 million to develop, and Mesa is considering a retail development tax incentive that would reimburse up to $950,000 for public infrastructure construction that will be built during construction of the hotel but then controlled by the city.
The “resort fee” that customers pay to stay at the hotel will grant them access to the beach, which otherwise costs between $35 and $50 for adults, depending on the day. Cannon said the hotel can be used to host various groups and said he has been in discussions with a nonprofit that benefits cancer patients about hosting patients for surfing trips or other fun events.
The final plans for the hotel will be submitted soon, Cannon said, and it will be the next phase to begin construction.
Also under construction is the final portion of an entertainment-oriented building, which already contains KTR, an indoor action sports playground, MiniCity, an indoor playground for smaller children and BRKTHROUGH, an escape room and challenge room. LVL 11, a movie theater and entertainment venue with go karts and bowling, is under construction in the building.
All of the restaurant and shop space along Power Road is complete, with about 18 businesses open there, Cannon said. Additional beachfront restaurants, including a tiki restaurant, a Mexican restaurant and a pickleball venue are in the works, in the area Cannon calls “restaurant row.”
The site has zoning to allow another hotel, but Cannon said he and his team will assess demand before moving ahead with any development. An office building with beach views is also planned in future phases. Cannon said he is in “serious talks” with office users for a new building.
