Calling all campers and nature enthusiasts, a new ranking of public campgrounds across America identified the best overall camping experiences in Arizona.
TRIO, a company focused on helping people stay connected in remote places, started with nearly 5,000 campgrounds listed on Recreation.gov and narrowed the list to the locations with the most reviews. The company then analyzed more than 111,000 Google reviews using an original algorithm designed to measure how campers consistently rated their experiences.
Each campground received an overall score from 0 to 100, based on its average Google rating and the overall sentiment expressed in its reviews. TRIO also evaluated eight categories that can shape a camping experience: cleanliness; facilities;
staff; peace and quiet; scenery; activities; bugs and pests; and the surrounding environment.
And many states made it to the top ten, even the Grand Canyon state. Here’s where Arizona ranked for best campgrounds.
What are the best campgrounds in Arizona?
Desert View Campground in Grand Canyon Village was ranked No. 10 among the best campgrounds in America, according to TRIO's rankings. It received an overall score of 94 out of 100 and had an average Google rating of 4.7 stars from 222 reviews.
The campground received particularly strong marks for cleanliness; facilities; peace and quiet; bugs and pests; and its surrounding environment, while staff and scenery were also rated positively. TRIO's review information highlights its clean bathrooms and quiet setting, as well as the possibility of finding last-minute campsites through Recreation.gov.
Some other campgrounds that make the top 136 list were:
- 38. Burro Creek Campground in Wikieup.
- 56. Mather Campground in Grand Canyon Village.
- 59. North Rim Campground at the Grand Canyon's North Rim.
- 61. Lees Ferry Campground in Marble Canyon.
- 66. Aspen Campground in Payson.
- 79. Clear Creek Campground in Camp Verde.
- 85. White Spar Campground in Prescott.
- 90. Manzanita Campground in Sedona.
- 93. Burnt Corral Campground in Roosevelt.
- 109. Cave Springs Campground in Sedona.
- 110. Dogtown Lake Campground And Group in Williams.
- 114. Pine Flat Campground in Sedona.
Another study highlight (or lowlight, depending on your perspective) was that two Arizona campgrounds were among America's loudest. Pine Flat Campground in Sedona was ranked fifth loudest, while Burnt Corral Campground in Roosevelt ranked No. 7 on that list.
