It’s been a whirlwind for rough and tumble running back Cam Skattebo, who has created a big name for himself following his exploits on the football field at Arizona State.
Here’s a look at some of the recent events that have shaped his life and budding NFL career with the New York Giants, who host the Arizona Cardinals at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday, Oct. 4:
ASU football finale: Cam Skattebo's coming-out party
Date: Jan. 1, 2025
Event: Peach Bowl. Despite being under the weather and getting sick right beforehand, Skattebo runs for two touchdowns, throws a 42-yard touchdown pass and accounts for 242 yards from scrimmage during ASU’s 39-31 overtime loss to Texas in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal in Atlanta.
Quote: "I was a little sick at the beginning of the game.
Wasn't feeling like myself. But that team ... the people that I was with, we never had any doubt every game we played. And as we kept going, guys were being positive and making sure that guys weren't allowing other guys to get down. I knew that we had a chance because I knew my team was going to fight with each other. It was just a great experience to be a part of that and I enjoyed it. But now it's on to the next chapter, so I'm excited."
The New York Giants select ASU football star Cam Skattebo
Date: April 26, 2025
Event: Skattebo gets drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round of NFL draft, the 105th overall pick.
Quote: "I'm super excited, man. I had a great visit with them and I'm glad I can be a part of this organization and be ready to take whatever's on storm and get going. ... I had a good time there (during his pre-draft visit) and enjoyed every conversation I had and every coach that I've talked to in that facility was very positive, very mindful of who I am. They appreciated the way I play and I appreciate them, the way they're picking in the draft. They're doing a good job and I'm excited to be a part of the team and get ready to work for them."
An ugly, awful low point in Cam Skattebo's NFL career
Date: Oct. 26, 2025
Event: Skattebo suffers a dislocated ankle, a tibia/fibula fracture and a deltoid ligament rupture during a Week 8 game against the Philadelphia Eagles that ends his rookie season. He accounted for 617 all-purpose yards and scored seven touchdowns. He later reveals he contemplated walking away from the game.
Quote: "Yeah, definitely. I would probably say a month in, like the first month was kind of like, ‘Damn, do I really want to do this?’ Coming out of college, going into the NFL, I think I gave myself one rule. It was if I ever got a major injury, I was done playing. And that happened seven games into my career, so it kind of sucked.”
ASU legend Cam Skattebo returns to the Sun Devils
Date: Nov. 28, 2025
Event: Getting around on a motorized scooter, Skattebo returns to Tempe amid cheers as an honorary captain for the Sun Devils at the Territorial Cup between ASU and UA at Mountain America Stadium.
Quote (to Fox 10 Phoenix): “Yeah, I mean just coming out here and being able to have all these people that support me across the country, when I get here and I realize it’s home, I feel it. Being an honorary captain and coming home and feeling the support got me a little emotional. It’s been awesome. … People love me, and I love this community and all these people that continue to give me support.”
More upheaval: a devastating knee injury to Cam Skattebo's QB
Date: Sept. 21, 2026
Event: Skattebo’s best friend on the Giants, quarterback Jaxson Dart, suffers a season-ending knee injury early during a 28-6 Week 2 loss at the Los Angeles Rams and backup Jameis Winston becomes New York’s starting quarterback.
Quote: “Yeah, it sucked. I talked to him on the sidelines a little bit (afterward). He’s my best friend. So, it’s a little emotional for me. It sucked to lose him, but we’ve got to move on.”
