Two former Arizona State football stars, Cam Skattebo and Jayden Daniels, tried to give their teams a win on Sunday, Oct. 11, but their efforts fell short.
Skattebo's New York Giants and Daniels' Washington Commanders played to a tie in regulation and couldn't produce a winner in overtime in a game that ended 27-27 at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.
The Giants began OT with a drive culminating in a missed field goal; the Commanders managed only four plays before having to punt.
New York, riding a huge performance from quarterback Jameis Winston, drove 67 yards in eight plays, but on that eighth play, Skattebo fumbled, and the Commanders recovered.
Skattebo went to the bench and was clearly upset as teammates walked over to try to lift his
spirits.
With new life, Daniels then drove Washington deep into Giants territory with 35 yards passing and a 16-yard scramble. After Rachaad White (another Sun Devils standout) gained 2 yards to the Giants 24, Daniels — and the Commanders coaching staff — had simultaneous brain locks.
Daniels, with no timeouts, allowed the clock to tick down from 40 seconds to about 5 seconds before the ball was snapped. Instead of killing the clock with an incomplete pass, however, Daniels danced around while the time melted away.
After Daniels was brought down for no gain, the Commanders tried in vain to get set as time expired.
Daniels struggled to explain in any kind of detail, but offered this:
"We all gotta be better situationally,” Daniels said. “Starts with me. Everybody will say the same thing, but we just gotta be better at situational football. . . . We gotta stop the clock; we gotta know the situation. We gotta relay that as an offense; it starts from everybody, top down. Ultimately, it’s on me.”
Neither team deserved to win. And neither team did.
