An estimated 1,000 to 5,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into Sedona’s Oak Creek, according to a city notice.
The city said it was testing water quality and would share results when available. The notice did not include results or instructions for people visiting the creek.
Wastewater crews responded to the Hillside Sedona shopping complex at 671 State Route 179 around 5:30 p.m. Oct. 25, after the city received a report of a sewer spill.
Crews determined that a restaurant grease clog appeared to have caused sewage to overflow from a manhole into a storm drain leading to the creek, the city said.
Crews stopped the spill around 7:30 p.m. and disinfected the area, according to the notice.
The city said staff would begin notifying nearby properties.
Oak Creek draws visitors for swimming and fishing, according to the state’s Visit Arizona tourism website.
