Location: Thomas Road and 67th Avenue in the Maryvale district of Phoenix.
Description: An apartment complex designed for affordability is rising above previously vacant land used to dump dead animals and trash.
NRP Group, based in Cleveland, Ohio, announced ground-breaking on the Desert Sky apartment project in December. Workers have installed foundations and begun wood framing on the new complex, which will encompass 288 affordable apartment units across nine three-story buildings when it's complete. Half of the apartments will be reserved for low-income families, according to an NRP news release.
History: The land has been vacant for decades, inhabited by weeds. A redevelopment report first posted by AZFamily.com describes the property before
the construction as containing significant trash and dumping around its exterior," with "a strong stench from the dead animals and trash."

When will the work be done? The construction will finish sometime in 2027, according to NRP.
