The San Antonio Spurs' legendary coach Gregg Popovich and one of his former protégés, ex-Phoenix Suns coach Mike Budenholzer, have now officially married the same woman.
The NBA's all-time winningest coach, the 77-year-old Popovich, got hitched to his second wife, Mary Barth Budenholzer, in Texas on Sept. 16, according to TMZ. Popovich's first wife, Erin Popovich, passed away from an undisclosed illness in 2018. That was two years after Budenholzer and his ex-wife divorced.
Budenholzer began his career as one of Popovich's assistants from 1996-2013. Together, Popovich and Budenholzer helped lead the Spurs to the first four of the franchise's five titles.
Popovich stepped down as the Spurs' coach in 2025, having suffered a stroke the previous year.
Budenholzer won NBA Coach of the Year honors twice, with the Atlanta Hawks and the Milwaukee Bucks in 2015 and 2019, respectively.
Budenholzer led Milwaukee to its 2021 title over the Suns; he was fired two years later.
Budenholzer then coached the Suns during the 2024-25 season. Amid championship expectations with the Big 3 of Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal and franchise cornerstone Devin Booker, Budenholzer's Suns endured a disastrous 36-win season and missed the 2025 playoffs.
The Suns let Budenholzer go after just one year in his return to his home state, Arizona.
