Crews have repaired a portion of State Route 88, or Apache Trail, after last week's monsoons caused damage to the roadway and forced a brief closure.
The Arizona Department of Transportation announced repairs were completed and a portion of the roadway was reopening on July 23, just in time for folks planning to make a weekend getaway.
The SR 88, which is located east of Phoenix, travels through the Superstition Mountains from U.S. 60 in Apache Junction to SR 188 near Roosevelt Lake.
During the storms, a rainfall gauge near Reavis Trailhead recorded more than 8 inches of rain, and a gauge near Fish Creek Hill registered more than 5 inches, according to preliminary data ADOT provided from the Maricopa County Flood Control District.
Crews worked over
several days to remove fallen rocks, clear clogged culverts and drains, grade the roadway and make additional repairs needed to reopen the segment of SR 88 between mileposts 240-222, from Roosevelt Dam and Fish Creek Hill, according to ADOT.
Work was still continuing in the area, and ADOT advised motorists to slow down and pay attention when approaching and driving through work zones.
