The Arizona Cardinals' loss to the New York Giants in NFL Week 4 on Oct. 4 was not without controversy.
Among the most controversial calls (or actually non-call) was when the officials did not call a penalty on the Giants for defensive pass interference late in the game, a non-call that forced Arizona to punt.
But it is what happened in the aftermath of that non-call that has everyone talking.
After the play, the Cardinals' Trey McBride approached line judge Jeff Seeman about why a flag wasn’t thrown, clearly upset with it being such an important moment in the game.
Seeman appeared to then launch some expletives in McBride's direction, as caught on video.
Wait…

What did he say to Trey McBride??? pic.twitter.com/Igy1eLaxM0
NFLPA President JC Tretter
called out the official's behavior as "unacceptable."
This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable. Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard. pic.twitter.com/vawHA8Jrlt

CBS Sports reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala gave details on the incident from her view on the sideline.
I was standing right there. What’s wild is that it all started with Trey McBride saying “please” when pleading his case for a PI flag. He was heated for sure, but I never heard a curse from him. The harshest he got was, “You’re ruining the game.” https://t.co/uvKzzxtq45

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the NFL is reviewing the situation.
The NFL said it is reviewing the situation in which an official appears to use profanity at Cardinals TE Trey McBride.

How social media reacted to referee interaction with Trey McBride
Many on social media called for more accountability on the officials in the wake of the incident with McBride.
Honestly, officials should be held to a higher standard than players. They are supposed to be unbiased arbiters. The people who police the game with integrity. There is no excuse for this @NFLOfficiating and the Player's Union shouldn't have to ask for the review. The @NFL should…

NFL officials and officiating is the worst I’ve seen in 65 years of watching football. The refs are absolutely awful.
— Freddy Schulman 🇺🇸🇮🇱👨🏻🍳 (@Fredmofla) October 5, 2026
If a player did that, it’s 15 yards and probably a fine. Officials should be held to the same standard. Fine the ref and assess the penalty against the team his actions affected. Accountability has to go both ways.
— Pocket Context (@PocketContext) October 4, 2026
This ref should absolutely be fired. Get ready to learn the high school rule book buddy.
— The Degenerate Sports Fan (@Robbie_S19) October 5, 2026
That seems like the simplest standard. If the behavior would be unacceptable from a player, it should be unacceptable from an official too.
— Kelly Storms (@kellystorms) October 4, 2026
That should be the end of his career as an NFL ref. Next time he’s refereeing something it’s gonna be a Pee-wee football league if he’s lucky.
— Tug & stuff (@kriley8888) October 4, 2026
Honestly one of the wildest things I’ve seen from a ref if it wasn’t the Cardinals this would be the number 1 trending thing from today
— Arizona Sports Hype (@HypeArizona) October 5, 2026
Hold these refs accountable. They’re ruining the game!
— Andrew Livingston (@AndrewLiv) October 5, 2026
These types of refs (and there is a lot of them) need to be let go. Their behavior and god complex on the field is ruining the game.
— TheWyomingite (@conservativehic) October 5, 2026
I’m actually curious to see what happens to this particular ref. Refs making bad calls is one thing. A ref blatantly being disrespectful to players is something else. And the fact we’ve heard nothing so far is outstanding.
