For many Americans, Walgreens has long been the go-to neighborhood pharmacy for prescriptions, over-the-counter medications and everyday essentials.

But that familiar stop is becoming less common as the company moves forward with a major downsizing effort. Walgreens is closing underperforming stores as it works to cut costs, improve profitability and adapt to changing shopping habits, lower prescription reimbursement rates, expiring leases and ongoing challenges such as retail theft.

Walgreens has also acknowledged that it expanded too aggressively over the years and now has more stores than it can profitably support.

The company says it is focusing on keeping its strongest-performing locations while streamlining the rest of its nationwide footprint.

Walgreens now expects fewer than 100 stores to close during 2026.
