A 15-year-old boy was recovering from traumatic injuries after falling roughly 30 feet at Carr Canyon Falls in southern Arizona.
The boy was treated for traumatic injuries on site before a rescue helicopter took him to a trauma center in Tucson. Family members were present when the fall happened about 5 p.m. Aug. 14, according to the Cochise County Sheriff's Office, which reported he had fallen near the bottom of the falls and was face down in the water.
Rescue efforts were hampered by rough terrain in the area and severe weather conditions, according to officials.
The boy was still in the hospital the morning of Aug. 17, according to Cochise County Sheriff's spokesperson Carol Capas.
Officials urged hikers to use caution in the area, particularly
during the late summer months in Arizona, which can experience additional rainfall.
"Carr Canyon Falls is a beautiful and popular location, particularly during monsoon season when the water is flowing, but it can also be extremely dangerous," the Cochise County Sheriff's Office shared in a social media post. "The rocks are slippery even when dry and become significantly more hazardous when wet."
