It would have been a perfect time for Arizona State football coach Kenny Dillingham to name his starting quarterback for the team's season opener. All signs point to Kentucky transfer Cutter Boley getting the nod. He has been taking the first-team reps. And Aug. 25 marked his 21st birthday.
Dillingham said last week he had hoped to get that formality out of the way Aug. 23rd or 24th. That time has passed. The Sun Devils open the season on Sept. 5 against Morgan State at Mountain America Stadium. Dillingham said he wanted to name a quarterback at least 10 days before that.
But when the Sun Devils wrapped up drills on Aug. 25 in the Verde Dickey Dome, the fourth-year head coach still was not ready to talk.
"We'll go through that here in the next
week or so," Dillingham said. "I thought today was (Boley's) best day. He brings joy every day; he's super consistent. Those are the things you look for. Happy birthday."
There were four quarterbacks in the hunt, but Dillingham had narrowed it down to Boley and Chandler High School product Mikey Keene, who is on his fourth school.
