A juvenile and a man were wounded in a shooting involving an off-duty Mesa police officer and a security guard on Oct. 10, police said.
The shooting happened about 1:05 a.m. outside Versalles Reception Hall, Mesa police spokesperson Detective J. Aguirre said in a statement. The juvenile was denied entry to a private event, then pointed a handgun at the guard and fired, Aguirre said.
The guard and off-duty officer followed the juvenile toward a vehicle and fired at him, Aguirre said. The release did not describe what the juvenile was doing with the gun when they fired.
The juvenile ran south across Main Street and encountered an on-duty Mesa officer, Aguirre said. He pulled out a handgun and threw it to the ground before being taken into custody.
The juvenile and a man in a vehicle associated with him were hospitalized with wounds that were not considered life-threatening, Aguirre said.
Aguirre did not identify whose gunfire struck them. The guard and off-duty officer were not injured.
Scottsdale police are leading the investigation through the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
Officer Aaron Bolin, spokesperson for the Scottsdale Police Department, did not have any updates on the case as of Oct. 12.
Mesa police are separately investigating the alleged aggravated assault preceding the shooting.
