The Diamondbacks were so close to another walkoff win on Saturday night, Aug. 8, but couldn't get the job done in a 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Dodgers at Chase Field.
Dodgers MVP candidate Shohei Ohtani beat out a ground ball wide of first base for an infield hit to drive in teammate Kyle Tucker with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning. The Diamondbacks couldn't get Ildemaro Vargas home from second base in the bottom of the inning.
Tim Tawa struck out after not being able to get a bunt down, then James McCann beat out a ground ball for an infield single to move Vargas to third base. But Dodgers' reliever Jack Dreyer got the hero of Friday night's walkoff win, Ryan Waldschmidt, to ground into a double play to end the game.
In the 10th,
young Diamondbacks reliever Gerardo Carrillo (2-1) got two outs but a wild pitch on a walk allowed Tucker to reach third base. Lefty Brandyn Garcia came on to face Ohtani, whose grounder was too far to the second base side for Tawa, the Diamondbacks' first baseman, to field it cleanly.
Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz got the win despite a second straight blown save.
Down 1-0 to open the bottom of the ninth, the Diamondbacks got back-to-back triples from Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll to tie the game at 1. Carroll shouted as he slid safely into third base, the Diamondbacks fans in the crowd of 46,213 going wild.
Carroll was stranded at third, however, as Diaz gathered himself and got Gabriel Moreno to line out, Ketel Marte on a pop out, and, after Lars Nootbaar was intentionally walked, a strikeout of Vargas.
The Diamondbacks managed seven hits but left 15 on base. Their five-game winning streak over L.A. came to an end.
Tucker greeted Diamondbacks reliever Jonathan Loaisiga with a solo home run to open the top of the eighth inning, breaking a scoreless tie. Loaisiga worked around two more hits allowed with strikeouts of Ohtani and Andy Pages to limit the damage.
Los Angeles, the National League West leaders, put an end to a season-high seven-game losing streak.
The Diamondbacks had earlier chances. They loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with two outs against Dodgers reliever Kyle Hurt with a Nolan Arenado single and a pair of walks. Tanner Scott, pitching for the second straight game after an inning of work on Friday night, got Waldschmidt to fly out to center field.
The Diamondbacks also had two on in the seventh, but Gabriel Moreno struck out to end the inning.
Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Pfaadt pitched seven scoreless innings, but got no run support.
The teams conclude the series at 1:10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9.

Carroll talks home run robbery
Diamondbacks right fielder Corbin Carroll had quite a Friday night, Aug. 7, stealing a home run with an over-the-wall catch against the Dodgers, being honored for his franchise triples record set this season and watching with pride while his girlfriend, Emma Broyles, sang the national anthem before the game.
Carroll said he knew he had taken a home run away from the Dodgers' Tommy Edman when he squeezed the ball in his glove at the top of his leap at the wall.
"Kind of a softer hit and higher ball, so a little more time to get back to the wall and assess," Carroll said. "I was real happy to make the play. That was probably the highest I've gotten on a chance like that."
Carroll said he'd never made a catch over the wall before. He couldn't sense that there were some in the crowd who in the moment were not sure he caught the ball.
With regard to the national anthem, Carroll knew something was up when he was told to be lined up on the left field foul line at 6:20 p.m. for the song. But he didn't know Broyles, the 2022 Miss America, was going to sing.
The two made eye contact as she was about to perform.
"It was like 'all right, let's hear it,'" he said.

Arenado honored by award
Diamondbacks third baseman Nolan Arenado received the 2026 Diamondbacks Heart and Hustle Award in a ceremony held before the game on Saturday, Aug. 9. Arenado is the Diamondbacks recipient of the award that was announced on Friday by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.
"Obviously it means a lot. I've never won it before so it's pretty cool," said Arenado, a 15th-year veteran. "It's the dedication to the craft and it's nice to know that my teammates recognize that."

One player from each Major League team is chosen by the MLBPAA committees based on their passion, desire, and work ethic demonstrated both on and off the field. The 2026 overall Heart and Hustle Award winner will be announced in mid-November on MLB Network.
"For him to be that committed every single day, that's voted on by his teammates, by his peers, speaks volumes about why he's been doing it for so long at such a high level," manager Torey Lovullo said. "Well-deserved honor. He does it right, he's very intentional with his day. He's very open about what he's coming to do for this team and his teammates, and everybody picks up on that vibe."

Diamondbacks injury updates
Outfielder Jordan Lawlar (hamstring) played seven innings in the outfield for Double-A Amarillo on Friday, Aug. 7, and was scheduled to serve as the DH on Saturday. Right-handed pitcher Drey Jameson (hip) was scheduled for an outing at the team's Salt River Fields facility on Saturday of one-plus innings, and right-handed reliever Justin Martinez (elbow surgery rehab) threw an inning at Class A Visalia on Friday, 14 pitches in a game and 11 in the bullpen.
Martinez's next stop could be Triple-A Reno for game work, manager Torey Lovullo said.
